Here at Whycocomagh Education Centre, we have students from pre-primary to Grade 8 with an enrollment of 150 students. Currently, our school is involved in a provincial initiative called "The Student Success Plan". The SSP focuses on three goals: Literacy, Mathematics and Student Wellness. Achieving these goals is a combined effort from students, teaching staff, administration, support staff and parents.
At WEC, we strive to achieve academic excellence and we incorporate environmental initiatives in our curriculum as often as we can. We follow the recycling and composting guidelines for the County; we try to keep our school yard free of litter; students are involved in a flower planting/beautifying project every spring and our students also have the benefit of other programs in our school which further enhances our environmental initiatives.
Our school offers Core French, Core Mi'kmaq and Core Gaelic language programs to students in Grades 4 to 8. We have a number of sports teams: soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, track and softball. We have a school drama club as well as many other opportunities and groups in which students can share their skills and talents.
Whycocomagh Education Centre is located on the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes is surrounded by mountains. Canada Geese, along with other birds, are seen often on the Lake and eagles often visit in the trees around the school grounds.
